Elena is still adjusting to life in Haven. She can't be blamed, it's only been a week.
She comes from a world rife with rifts, so the troubles aren't really something she needs adjusting to. She has nightmares about the orphan island, but she's tough - she will be okay. It's been years since she's seen Stefan, though she knows it's been longer since Stefan has seen her. Almost a hundred years, really. She knows for a vampire, that's not much, but to Elena, it seems like an eternity. They are still feeling each other out, but Elena is trying to show her gratitude to Stefan for helping not only letting her stay with him and helping her settle in, but also potentially landing an interview for Vince and Dave Teagues. The local newspaper seems as good a place to start as any.
Then again, with the hellish snow they've been getting over the weekend, they likely won't be going anywhere today.
The problem with wanting to show her gratitude is she decided making breakfast would be a good way to do it. Something that hasn't changed about Elena is she is not a very good cook, but she is determined to make sure it's at least edible. Stefan will likely wake up to the smell of fresh coffee, at the very least, while she ensures these omelets survive.
Stefan is roused by the smell of coffee first. Coffee is good. Coffee is great actually. It's the smell of food that just might be on the edge of burning that worries him, and draws him from his bed, making his way through the apartment to the kitchen.
Stefan is always going to be grateful that Elena is here. Being alone isn't all it's cracked up to be, and it doesn't matter how long they're separated, they still manage to fall into the same patterns, one way or another. Elena is always going to be Elena and Stefan is always going to be Stefan and she's the one person in this town that he doesn't have to lie to. He's always going to value that, one way or another.
He makes his way into the kitchen, and brushes past the coffee to lean over his shoulder and see what she's doing. "Whatcha doing?"
Elena swivels in place at the sound of Stefan's voice, inching further to the right to hide the funny-looking omelet. She doesn't want him to see it until she can sort of - fix it? At least it's not burnt. She doesn't think. It looks yellow-ish?
"I'm making breakfast." It's said in an oddly chirpy voice as she shoves a coffee mug in his direction to keep him from peeking over her shoulder any further. Nothing to see here. Nothing at al...
He pushes up on his toes as though he's trying to peer over her shoulder and get a better look at it, but she could very easily stop him if she tried. He's just mostly doing it to mess with her. "I feel like I'm being made witness to a very rare event - Elena Gilbert, cooking."
Elena knows he is stepping closer to mess with her, but she holds her breath all the same at the proximity, pushing up on her tippy toes and leaning further back to hide the disastrous omelet. "Haven't you heard the expression there's always a first time for everything?" Elena asks, finally lifting her gaze to meet his.
"I have," he says with a nod. "This just isn't one of the firsts I actually thought I'd see." He's still mostly teasing, but he will at least lean back and give her some space so that Elena does't lean back so far that she's wandering into burning herself territory. "Color me curious."
Elena smiles back in spite of herself, straightening back up once he leans back.
"I wanted to do something nice," she explains, grabbing the plates and taking them to the table where they can eat it. Surprisingly, the bacon looks pretty good. "To say thank you. For ... everything."
His head tips to the side and he bites back the obvious snarky comment - Elena, you cooking for someone is not really the way to say thank you - but he can appreciate the sentiment behind it and he nods.
"Always," he says with a small smile. "I'll always be here for you if you need me." He pauses. "Provided we're both in the same universe, of course."
Because oddly enough that's a problem they've had.
"They really don't like keeping us in the same place for too long, do they?" she asks of the rifts. It's been a long time - she knows that time feels differently to Stefan than it does to her, but a year for Elena is a really long time.
Stefan shakes his head. A year is long enough to him, to be honest. Ninety is almost unimaginable. So much changes in a decade, let a lone a century, he can't really say he's the same person that left Chicago any more than she can - even if he just happens to be reliving a century he's already lived before.
"I think we should just make the most of it while we have it. Not worry about how long and just ... enjoy it."
Elena considers his proposition. It's almost like a weight's been lifted. There's a freedom to not worrying about the when and the where. She smiles, lifting up her orange juice as though in toast.
"To here and now?" she asks. Which is her way of agreeing, but swankier.
He nods in agreement, before shifting to lift up his own juice as well to clink it against hers. "To here and now." Which is definitely a lot better than getting bogged down in the past.
